For all immersive display types, you have the option of both 2D and 3D.
2D refers to looking at a screen and seeing a two-dimensional image. This is how traditional TV screens work. The images are flat and have no depth. Most phone and computer screens work in 2D. You can also watch 2D content on an immersive display, such as a 2D movie on a 3D screen. 2D vs 3D It really comes down to what you want to watch. If you want to experience the sensation of ‘being there’ then 3D is for you. If you just want to sit back and enjoy a movie or TV show, 2D will be fine.
There are two types of immersive display screens: active and passive.
Active 3D means the glasses act as high-speed shutters. Normal video runs at 60 frames per second (also written as 60fps or 60 Hz). Active 3D content typically runs at 120 frames per second. Your glasses are wirelessly controlled to interrupt the view to each eye in turn (hence ‘active’) and synchronized to the stream of video frames, so each eye gets its own viewpoint at 60fps. Active 3D works with all screen types and surfaces.
Passive 3D is also typically 120 frames per second. The separation for each eye is created by using polaroid or other filter technology such as cinema RealD. Passive 3D glasses are relavely cheap so are attractive for applications for many viewers.
