Standards' application to Microsoft Teams Rooms and hybrid spaces is a hot topic
'Enhanced hybrid spaces' reflects an ambition. Standards are the route to fulfilment here.
The headline is issue is one of definition and taxonomy. The word 'Standard' has multiple meanings. The vital thing is to have a crystal clear understanding - and consistency - within the organisations, vertical markets etc that use them as to their meaning and objective.
Here are some examples.
BOMs (bill of materials). Effectively a detailed shopping list. But buying great ingredients doesn't guarantee we cook great meals. There's a whole edifice of assumptions and requirements that are implicit behind issuing a BOM. BOMs are high-risk devices if there's not the required knowledge, training, and certification to ensure practitioners are able to create a great user experience from the equipment and software.
Best practices. A step back from a standard, giving guidelines and practical advice and tending to avoid being too proscriptive. They tend to go out of date very quickly and it's common to see these stay in circulation as 'better than nothing' options. Version control is definitely an essential here.
Performance standards. Now this is where the rubber hits the road. By prescribing good user experience in measurable granular metrics, this respects the skill of practitioners in choosing the way of creating these outcomes - but in a brand agnostic ways. (Manufacturers are understandably keen to be involved in 'standards' as it can be seen as an opportunity to have their products specified in preference to their competition.
