A reflection on shiny screens…
Shiny, reflective display screens create totally avoidable problems in Microsoft Teams Rooms and hybrid meeting/teaching spaces. Once you’re aware of it, the way you look at screens changes forever!
Awareness of this problem grew in 2022. Shiny screens effectively create a barrier between in-person and remote participants. The in-person experience of remote participants can be like looking at people trapped in an aquarium - plus they’re usually way too bright.
Shiny screens create what’s known as ‘veiling reflections’ where you have to move your head to see around a reflection of a light, cancelling visibility of parts of the screen. In extreme cases it’s known as ‘disability glare’ which is depressingly common.
These problems are totally avoidable, and are one of a list of user problems that are unwittingly designed into a room.
The specialism of detailed room design and specification is often overlooked, but now forms a large part of my consulting practice.
