A Monte Carlo Gala’s 1,500 sqm immersive dome
Erected on the terraces of the Monte Carlo Opera, the dome was made possible by pairing Modulo Pi media servers with two dozen Barco and Panasonic video projectors.
Organised by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the Monte-Carlo Gala for Planetary Health was held on 24 September on the terraces of the Monte-Carlo Opera. For this edition dedicated to Ocean, Earth, and Humanity, an audience of patrons, decision-makers, artists, and scientists gathered under an immersive dome. Designed and produced by the event agency TUFF Consult, the technical setup relied on 5 x Modulo Kinetic and 1 x Modulo Player media servers, supplying 1.500 sqm of projection.
Since 2006, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation has been working to protect the environment and promote sustainable development on a global scale. Since its creation, more than 540 projects have been worked on by the foundation’s international branches located in France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Canada, Germany, Italy, Singapore, Spain, and China.
Organized from 21 to 27 September, Planetary Health Week reached its climax with its Gala held amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Presided over by H.S.H Prince Albert II of Monaco with Sting as guest of honour, the gala brought together patrons, decision-makers, artists, and scientists to discover the initiatives carried out by the Foundation. The organization of the event was entrusted to the agency TUFF Consult, who imagined an immersive dome to welcome the participants for a night under the theme of Ocean, Earth, and Humanity.
Over the charity dinner and the auction organised to raise funds, guests were immersed in images created by the studio Spectre Lab, featuring galaxies, forests, and ocean floors. To produce this immersive space, AV provider Fosphor relied on 22 x Barco UDX-4K40 and 4 x 20K Panasonic video-projectors to illuminate a half-sphere of 1.500sqm.
The Modulo Kinetic media server solution by Modulo Pi completed the setup: One Modulo Kinetic Designer workstation and four Modulo Kinetic V-Node servers were used to feed 22 of the video-projectors.
To give the impression of one single image projected on the half-sphere and enveloping the audience, the setup and adjustment of video-projectors was key. The technical team could rely on the 3D tools available in Modulo Kinetic: A 3D model of the half-sphere was imported in Modulo Kinetic, video-projectors were selected within the media server’s internal library, and pre-positioned in the 3D scene. The 3D simulation functions in Modulo Kinetic allowed the handling of most of the soft edge and warping before being on site.
Once arrived on site, the technical team had to deal with the structure whose position was impacted by temperature and wind variations. The 2D curve warping functions in Modulo Kinetic helped correct and fine-tune the projection.
In addition, 1 x Modulo Player media server was used for 3 x video-projectors in charge of projecting on sliding doors on stage. When moving doors equipped with an encoder, Modulo Player retrieved the position information of the doors in real-time, simultaneously adapting the position of the projected media thanks to the Digimap function.
The Modulo Player server was controlled by the Modulo Kinetic Designer which centralised all commands within a single interface. A system of tasks created in Modulo Kinetic then ensured a perfect synchronisation of the orders sent.
