Panasonic signs huge immersive projection deal
Forty-six 50,000 lumens Panasonic laser projectors will deliver three billion pixels in each of 25 to 30 entertainment venues to be known as Illuminariums.
Panasonic has been named the official technology partner of a new brand of immersive digital experiences, such as virtual safaris, which plans to open 25 to 30 venues across the world in the next five years. The partnership with Illuminarium Experiences was announced at this year’s virtual CES show.
Illuminarium Experiences will open its first three venues in Atlanta, Miami and Las Vegas in the US, with further venues following in big cities and tourism destinations around the world. The venues, known as Illuminariums, will host 46 4K laser projectors in their main spaces, projection mapping over three billion pixels. Panasonic will also supply 4K professional displays and 4K professional cameras.
“What museums are to art, cinemas to movies and concert halls to music, Illuminariums are to experiential entertainment. With venues of approximately 25,000 square feet and 25+ foot high ceilings, Illuminariums are reprogrammable immersive theatres that surround visitors in a sensory space of sight, sound and scale unlike any other,” the immersive entertainment company said.
The Illuminariums will feature Holoplot beamforming sound systems, which use field synthesis algorithms, to surround audiences with rich, spatial audio. Beyond sight and sound, haptic systems built into the floor will stimulate the senses through vibrating ground effects. Responsive and interactive technologies employing remote sensing LIDAR technology will also play a part in the experience.
The first Illuminarium spectacle, entitled Wild: The World’s First Virtual Safari, will open in Atlanta in mid-2021. Empowered by the Panasonic PT-RQ50K laser projector and a specially designed Panasonic UST lens with minimal offset and loss of light, visitors will be transported to Africa where they will journey through varied habitats. Illuminarium Experiences will also open an R&D and post-production centre next to its Atlanta venue where it will work in collaboration with Panasonic, Holoplot and disguise.
“We’re excited to partner with Illuminarium whose mission to expand communal access to amazing, but typically out-of-reach places and experiences is truly awe-inspiring,” said Joe Conover, manager of Panasonic Live Events Group.
“Illuminarium spectacles will transport visitors through an unprecedented combination of total sensory immersion, larger than life scale, and theatrical inspiration that would not be possible without the groundbreaking, best-in-class technology from our valued partners like Panasonic,” said Alan Greenberg, CEO of Illuminarium Experiences.
