Forced perspective projection illusion energises cycling fans
Pixel Artworks created the illusion that an illuminated athletics track was moving in a show for the UCI Track Champions League in London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
Immersive experience studio Pixel Artworks has energised more than 6,000 sports fans and entertained over two million broadcast viewers, with a light show using forced perspective projection mapping to create the illusion of a cycling track moving and transforming.
The light sequence brought to life the opening sequence of Round 3 and the Final Round of the UCI Track Champions League at the Lee Valley Velopark in London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
Pixel Artworks created the visual language for the show with a visual story that aligns with the vision of Discovery Events for the UCI Track Champions League. Using 3D elements in the live event production, the effects build, starting off with spotlights that turn into an electrified track of the future, building speed and velocity until the climax of the race where the track is fully illuminated and moving at the speed of light.
Pixel Artworks was appointed by Great Big Events to build suspense and excitement ahead of cycling entering the track, with a show designed to pique the audience’s interest and increase engagement.
Riaz Farooq, creative director at Pixel Artworks, commented: “Cycling is a fantastic sport but the fan participation isn’t there as much as it could be. We wanted to create an experience to rile up the crowd ahead of the actual race and add to the overall experience. Every event should be magical – and who could resist the allure of illusion.”
