The world’s largest 8K UHD LED floor display, with an overall area of 10,393 sq m, has played a key role at the Beijing Winter Olympics, illuminating the stage floor of the games’ opening ceremony. Also forming part of the opening ceremony was a giant snowflake-shaped cauldron, also made from LED panels.
In a report by the Global Times newspaper, the LED stage floor was said to be comprised of more than 40,000 LED modules, according to its lead developer, the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology, a state-owned manufacturer of civilian and military space launch vehicles.
According to this report, the opening ceremony made use of space control, IoT and 5G technologies, to co-ordinate the position of thousands of performers and other personnel.
The opening ceremony also showed Olympic rings, made with a special aluminum alloy truss structure, and a coating of LED display screens, rising from the icy LED stage floor.
According to a statement by Unilumin, Unilumin and BOE Technology were jointly involved in the creation of the displays. Commenting on the opening ceremony, the company said: “This grand event provided a stunning visual feast that combined digital technology and beautiful creative designs. It was not only technologically advanced, but dynamic, aesthetically pleasing, and experiential.”
Unilumin is the exclusive partner for LED displays and lighting for Team China and was granted the right to use the Team China trademark in May 2021. The company’s display and lighting products are also in use at the country’s General Administration of Sport, training centres such as the Beijing Wukesong Arena, and in an Olympic swimming pool.
However, Leyard International has also played a role in the LED supply for the opening ceremony, reporting that it worked with the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation and director Zhang Yimou.
According to its statement, the LED supplied for the opening ceremony included an 11,000sqm floor LED display, a 1,200sqm ice waterfall LED display, a 600sqm ice cube LED display, and 1,000 sqm screens on both sides of the stand at the ceremony’s Bird-Nest stadium.
